BTS - ECO – an intelligent system for managing and optimizing the power consumption of radio network components in a heterogeneous hardware environment of telecommunications operators.

Project Description

Radio Access Networks (RAN) are a fundamental component of modern telecommunications, yet they also account for a significant portion of global energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The goal of the BTS-ECO project is to create a system that automates the process of optimizing energy consumption in base stations operating within diverse hardware environments.

The project will involve the development of a solution that:

- Collects and aggregates data from energy meters in base stations,
- Applies machine learning models to forecast network load in various locations,
- Generates base station operation schedules based on these forecasts,
- Distributes these schedules to base stations to optimize energy usage,
- Monitors the effectiveness of the implemented optimization strategies.

Project Objectives

The primary objective is to develop a prototype system that intelligently adapts energy consumption in base stations by predicting network load in real time and adjusting equipment operation accordingly. The aim is to reduce energy demand while maintaining high service quality.

The project will be executed in three phases

1. Analysis of temporal correlations in load across individual base stations and cells.
2. Incorporation of spatial correlations to determine which stations are truly needed at any given moment.
3. Automated control and monitoring to ensure the system operates effectively in a heterogeneous hardware environment.

Target Group

The target market for the proposed solution consists of mobile network operators operating both in Poland and in international markets. The telecommunications sector is characterized by dynamic growth, an increasing number of base stations, and rising electricity consumption. As a result, optimizing operational costs—including energy expenditures—has become a key component of operators' strategic planning.

The solution will initially be implemented in collaboration with P4 sp. z o.o., the operator of the Play network. P4 has expressed interest in the project outcomes and has offered the applicant access to the data necessary for both the research and implementation phases.

Expected Outcomes

The anticipated results of the project include:

- Development of a demonstrator system showcasing how energy consumption in BTS networks can be efficiently reduced,
- Creation of prototype intelligent algorithms enabling dynamic energy management across various telecom infrastructures,
- Contribution to CO₂ emissions reduction, marking a significant step toward more sustainable telecommunications.
